Backcountry Skiing

Backcountry Skiing

Earning your turns, skinning up to access endless powder fields. In Colorado our snow stays fresh in the backcountry for weeks after the last storm, and there are endless secret spots where it never gets tracked out. a day in the backcountry starts with getting outfitted with touring skis, binding, and skins, as well as the requisite avalanche safety equipment, a beacon, shovel and probe. a short drive takes us to the trailhead where we run through a quick briefing on avalanche safety. Then we skin up! in Crested Butte  we  access one of several different valleys depending on conditions. Other areas in colorado include Berthoud Pass, Red Mountain Pass, and many other stashes across the state.

Hut Trips

Want to spend a few days to a week in the mountains, living the simple life; eat, ski, repeat? Colorado holds many great backcountry huts where you can get away for a ski adventure. The 10th Mountain Division and San Juan Hut systems offer great backcountry hut to hut skiing. Crested Butte has huts perfectly situated for base camp with day tours right out the door, and the Hinsdale Haute Route has great hut to hut touring for beginner-intermediate skiers who want to enjoy the mountains.

British Columbia

Canada  is famous for its deep powder and backcountry lodges. Valhalla Mountain Touring and the Kokanee Glacier Lodge offer snowcat/helicopter approaches to the lodge, so bring whatever you want! Day tours with high alpine descents, perfect gladed trees, and bottomless powder make the week go by all too fast. A week at VMT includes a chef to cater all gourmet meals which are prepared fresh with organic ingredients, wood fired sauna, hot shower and all the comforts of home.
